Dusky Starfontlet Bird Reserve.

In order to guide strategies and actions for management, conservation, restoration and sustainable use of Dusky Starfrontlet Bird Reserve and its buffer zone, established a conservation plan. This plan was based on a methodology of The Nature Conservancy which guided us to analyze the most important aspects for effective planning, such as:

1. Conservation targets: potential and current use of habitat of the threatened species selected, which in our case were 16 species and the ecosystem: Páramo del sol, Quercus humboltii, Espeletia frontinoensis, Polylepis quadrijuga, Atelopus nicefori, Bolitoglossa Medemia, Centrolene geckoideum, Centrolene buckleyi , Coeligena urine, Hypopyrrhus pyrohypogaster, Diglossa gloriosissima, Hapalopsittaca amazonina, Grallaria alleni, Chlorochrysa nitidissima, Dendroica cerúlea and Tremarctos ornatus. Based on this information priority areas were identified to conserve in an area of 80,000 hectares defining a conservation corridor that will connect to the Natural Bird Reserve Colibrí del Sol with PNN Orchids.

2. Threat analysis: We worked with the program Miradi.

3. Sources of stress analysis.

4. Social and biophysical characterization.

5. Evaluation of environmental goods and services.

6. Zoning.

7. Characterization farm.

8. Planning targets.

9. Ecotourism plan.

All information was analyzed in the same way with the tool of Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

The study area of 80,000 hectares covering the towns of Urrao, Abriaquí, Santa Fe de Antioquia and Caicedo in the department of Antioquia, and was selected as an area of high global importance for biodiversity conservation and other natural resources (EBA 2005). It offers a variety of habitats for a high diversity of fauna and flora and presents a unique scenic beauty as well as being ranked as the biggest hydrographic star of the Antioquia basin. This site has 12 species of birds have been seen for the first time in the western mountains, 28 species had extensions of range in the western mountains and three species listed by the IUCN are threatened with global extinction, on the other hand, is the Coeligena urine Hummingbird, known as Inca Frontino, which only had a registry entry by Carriker in 1951.

According to Krabbe et al 2005, the Frontino Páramo area is of particular relevance to global bird conservation and should be classified as a “key site” in this sense, which is also listed as a site AZE – CO2.

Conservation Plan Páramo del Sol (Urrao, Antioquia).

An important product of this paper was to identify the area to where the conservation action of the Natural Bird Reserve Colibrí del Sol should be guided, this point was highlighted much because it is a tool that tells us how to effectively address conservation actions, which is why this plan will be a pilot plan at the time of planning and establishing private conservation areas in the country and Latin America.
