The Black-backed Thornbill is an endangered and endemic species of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and its survival is by no means secure. Unrelenting habitat loss due to the conversion of forested areas to agricultural lands and cattle pastures have severely impacted this birds habitat and its ability to forage and reproduce successfully.

The El Dorado Bird Reserve protects 880 hectares (2,175 acres) of critical montane cloud forest for this spectacular species and many other endangered and critically endangered species which call the Santa Marta de Sierra Nevada home.

With support from many entities and individuals, the El Dorado Bird Reseve protects into perpetuity critical habitat for the Black-backed Thornbill and many other enigmatic creatures of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta found nowhere else on the planet.
