Aimed at students, professionals, representatives of governmental and nongovernmental organizations from all countries of Latin America with prior basic experience in catching, handling and banding of birds that want to delve into this technique and receive high level training for its completion.
Objective
Raise the level of people with basic experience in banding and provide advanced training in this technique to raise the level of banders in Colombia and Latin America to internationally accepted standards.
Bird banding is a technique that requires practice to be perfected. From the ring to the most experienced rookie constantly needs to refresh their knowledge and exchange with others to adapt new techniques to further progress and better quality of information that is collected. Learning never ends and the good use of this tool is important to raise awareness about birds in the Neotropics.
Upon completion of the course participants will be able to:
• Determining the age and sex of the species using general methods (eg, different generations of feathers, a feather, growing rods and wear, brood patch, cloacal protuberance, sexual dimorphism in color or size). And as these general methods are related to specific criteria used to determine the age and sex of birds within the life cycle of the species.
• Use the book Identification Guide to the Birds of North America (Pyle 2001) for identification and determination of the age and sex of Neotropical migratory birds.
• Recognize the health of a bird as hypothermia, overheating, stress, cramps, weakness, and to take necessary measures to ensure the welfare of the bird.
• Code the proportion of the development of flight feathers in the molting process (quantification d moves) and understand its relationship to life history and ecology of the species. And as this is useful for determining the age of the bird in the hand.
• Estimate the wing formula, number of primaries emarginate, number of primaries to the wing tip (primary longer) and length of the second primary in relation to the other primaries of equal length.
