Project History
The Blue-billed Paujil (Crax alberti), is endemic to Colombia and critically endangered at national and global level, mainly due to habitat destruction, fragmentation of the forests where they live and because they are hunted for human consumption. Their last populations are found in northeastern Antioquia, Rio Sinu and San Jorge Valleys, north-western foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Serrania de San Lucas and San Jacinto and Middle Magdalena Valley in the Sierra de las Quinchas.
ProAves, through the implementation of environmental education campaigns and conservation as the main tool for protecting endangered species and their habitats; since 2004, has generated a variety of conservation strategies complemented with research to protect this Paujil and it has engaged the community directly marked in the different areas where there are populations of the species, which became the main point of action of this work.
To this end, since 2003 the team of researchers who participated in this project, has worked hard in implementing strategies and action plans that promote the conservation of the Blue-billed Paujil and their habitat as well as promoting the strong environmental education campaign and that applies to all municipalities affected by the project.
