Success of 4th Migratory Bird Festival

The Migratory Bird Festival of 2007, led by ProAves in Colombia, reached more than 13,000 people in more than a fourth of the country. The festival received unprecedented media coverage, bringing environmental education about migratory birds to the community during the month of October.

The event is part of the International Migratory Bird Day and was dedicated to migratory birds in rural landscapes. It was conducted in 9 of the 32 departments (states) of Colombia involving over 800 adults and 5,457 children and youth; additionally, over 7,000 people visited the mobile environmental education unit, The Parrot Bus, during the festival.

Environmental education activities were carried out in Boyacá, Antioquia, San Andres Island, Magdalena, Santander, Norte de Santander, Nariño, Cauca and Quindío and in the cities of Bogota and Armenia. Activities were led by ProAves environmental education officers, with the support of teachers, community leaders, children and youth groups of Ecological Friends of Birds (Grupo Amigos de la Aves) and Schools Friends of Birds both ProAves initiatives.

Activities in El Paujil, San Andrés, Roncesvalles, and San Vicente de Chucurrí.

Environmental education activities included distribution of 16,250 resources such as posters, stickers, and bracelets on migratory birds. The Festival was promoted by several radio and television stations, and local and national newspapers, reaching more than twenty million people in Colombia.

Furthermore the festival attracted the attention of the following universities: Javeriana, National, Military, and District, that joined the campaign through presentations on migratory birds and bird watching sessions.
