Among the forests of the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes is one of the last known habitats of the majestic Antioqueño Arrierito, (Lipaugus weberi), an endemic bird Critically Endangered (CR) with Extinction.

With the aim of protecting this species, ProAves created the Arrierito Antioqueño ProAves Reserve in 2006, for the conservation of this bird that lives only in a few small remaining fragments of forest in this mountain range. Unfortunately, its  native habitat has been largely destroyed due to the exploitation of gold and large-scale deforestation for the establishment of pastures.

In addition to the Antioqueño Arrierito (Lipaugus weberi), this Reserve allows you to see a diversity of other incredible species such as: the Multicolored Tanager (Chlorochrysa nitidissima), the Acute Bill (Oxyruncus cristatus), the Stiles’ Tapaculo (Scytalopus stilesi), the Parker’s Antbird (Cercomacra parkeri) and the Mountain Elaenia (Myiopagis olallai). You will also be able to take walks along the internal trails, observe the nocturnal wildlife and enjoy the landscapes of Northeast Antioqueño.

Our ProAves Arrierito Antioqueño Reserve is located 160 km from the city of Medellín, and can be reached by public transport or private car. Currently, the Medellín-Anorí road is the best route for visitors traveling to our Nature Reserve.

We invite you to visit us and enjoy an amazing nature experience in the home of the majestic Arrierito Antioqueño.
