OUR
STORY

The ProAves Foundation was born in 1998 from the dream of a passionate group of conservationists determined to save the Yellow-eared Parrot from extinction in Colombia. Their remarkable success in protecting this critically endangered species led to the official founding of ProAves in 2001, in Jardín, Antioquia.

Building on that early achievement, ProAves expanded its mission to safeguard Colombia’s globally threatened wildlife with a special focus on birds and amphibians through scientific research, targeted conservation actions, and deep community engagement.

Today, ProAves manages 27 Nature Reserves in some of Colombia’s most biologically important landscapes. These protected areas are critical strongholds for a wide array of threatened species. Among them:

  • One Reserve is dedicated exclusively to migratory bird species
  • Two Reserves are focused on amphibian conservation
  • Three Reserves have priority threatened mammal species
  • The remaining twenty-one Reserves have the purpose of protecting Colombia’s imperilled birdlife

At the heart of our success is the unwavering passion of the ProAves family and the strength of our partnerships. We work hand-in-hand with local communities, national stakeholders, and global allies to protect Colombia’s rich biodiversity. It is profoundly inspiring to witness the deep love that Colombians have for their natural heritage and to be part of a growing movement to ensure its survival for generations to come.
