Bird Banding

15 June, 2010

As a system to regulate the activities of capture and handling of birds, ProAves has been standardizing and elevating the quality of bird banding in Colombia, so that it contributes to monitoring and conservation efforts.

After two years of work our greatest achievement has been to increase the capacity of Colombian banders, bringing together a group of international trainers that disseminate their experience in the country.

Among the achievements of the program are:

- An online recording system to report of recaptures and recoveries.
- A banding protocol available for qualified people, which includes banding formats for data recording.
- A SNA webpage, updated by more than 12,000 visits up to December 2006.
- 31 banding agreements. Two volunteer banding groups formed in 2006.
- Nine training courses (three in 2006) with three defined levels of training.
- An online database with 70,000 records.
- Chair of the Western Hemisphere Bird banding Network.
- The certification of two members of ProAves as banders and trainers by the North American Banding Council.
- Training of two members of ProAves in banding by the Wetland Trust, England.
- The recovery in Guatemala of a Nazca Booby banded in Malpelo Island. The record was made through the program that is carried out with Malpelo Foundation, Calidris Association, Invemar and Conservation International.
