El Dorado Bird Reserve was created in 2006 by ProAves to preserve one of the most fragile and important sites in Colombia and the world, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta; a total of 2.530 acres, all preserved in perpetuity, is home to many unique plant and animal species, in its interior is one of the largest concentrations of the most important endemic species on the planet.
El Dorado Reserve is a natural paradise that combines the best of the natural treasures of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta with an excellent lodge, from here you can see, not only the vastness of the mountains surrounding the reserve, but the greatness of the sea, it is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the scenery and the great snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the highest in the country.
In the Reserve you can see 337 birds species including 19 endemic species such as the Santa Marta parakeet (Pyrrhura viridicata), the Santa Marta bush tyrant (Myiotheretes pernix) and the Santa Marta saberwing (Campylopterus phainopeplus). For these values the reserve is classified as a AZE Site (www.zeroextinction.org) and an important area for the conservation of birds -AICA- (www.birdlife.org).
