PARROTS THREATENED

PARROTS THREATENED

Parrots are a species that is highly susceptible to environmental changes. Of the 55 species registered in Colombia, 10 are threatened with extinction. That is why the ProAves Foundation has been developing different conservation actions for more than 20 years to protect threatened parrot species in the country.

Protecting Endangered Parrot Species

In 1999, the Yellow-eared Parrot was on the brink of extinction with only 81 individuals remaining. After two decades of conservation efforts by ProAves, together with many other organizations and communities, the population of this species now exceeds 2,600 individuals.

Ognorhynchus icterotis is currently classified as Vulnerable (VU) by the IUCN, and its populations continue to grow.

The Blue-crowned Parrot is currently listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List.

Thanks to the efforts of ProAves, together with other partners, data has been obtained on fluctuations in the abundance of individuals.

Santa Marta Parakeet (Pyrrhura viridicata)

The Santa Marta Parakeet is an endemic species that inhabits the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It is classified by the IUCN as Endangered (EN) due to the small number of locations where it has been recorded.

ProAves has implemented several conservation measures to save this wonderful species from extinction.

Green macaw (Ara ambiguus)

There are six species of macaws of the genus Ara in Colombia: Ara ararauna, Ara ambiguus, Ara chloropterus, Ara macao, Ara severus, and Ara militaris. Thanks to the agreement signed between ProAves and Jerónimo Martins Colombia S.A.S., we are making progress in implementing a project for the conservation of these macaws in the country, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the species and mitigating threats through environmental education, awareness-raising, protection, and restoration of their key habitats.
