Help us with Fire Relief for our Jaguars in ProAves Reserves!

Colombian Amazon-Orinoco has been in a state of exceptional drought, driven by low rainfall and consistently high temperatures for the entire year. In Colombia alone has battled with a severe environmental crisis with 21 forest fires occurring all across the nation. Big forest fires consume core habitats of jaguars. But also result in the displacement, loss of prey, dehydration of habitat, lowering territorial defence, and lower fertility are among the impacts that may affect the abundance of the populations after a fire.

The Meta and Guaviare Basins (where also our reserves Jaguar and Harpy eagle are located) show an increase in the number of fires. Especially with the lower river levels during the dry season that naturally starts from June until November. It will be essential to have a good preparation before the dry season starts to prevent fires and extinguish them out before they get out of hand.

We seek to raise USD$10,000, and our generous supporter, conservation Allies, has pledged to match up to USD$5,000.

We are seeking to raise these funds to safeguard the key habitat for the Jaguar and prevent habitat from being lost due to fires. With your help, we can do the following things.

Your support will help us with funding for:

The following tools need to be reviewed before the dry season starts so we have an effective response and mobilization to prevent fire breaks out.

  • Early Warning/Predictive systems (Climate and weather monitoring).
  • Community warning mechanisms (Fire Danger Rating or FDR system & public notification means)
  • Detection and response infrastructure (Detection and suppression resource needs assessment)
  • Communications systems
  • Mobilisation and co-ordination plans
  • Response triggers and levels (Fire detection, suppression and communications resources)
  • Competent fire control staff (Fire training systems and tools)
