The area was purchased with the support of Robert Giles, of the ProAves Council, and is named in honor of the St. Andrew’s Vireo (Vireo caribaeus) locally called Chincherry, a bird endemic to the island. It is intended to become a strategic training center in ringing techniques for Colombia and the Caribbean, which will allow strengthening different projects and collaboration with other ringing programs in the region. San Andrés is a small island in the Colombian Caribbean that is an important transit area for migratory birds. It is part of the “Seaflower” Biosphere Reserve, in turn declared an Important Area for the Conservation of Birds – IBA (Birdlife 2005)
In 2006, ProAves acquired on the island of San Andrés a set of three properties with habitat for migratory birds, including mangroves, with the aim of converting them into a mechanism to consolidate and promote research, conservation and education activities on the island around the birds and their associated biodiversity, and allow the participation and dissemination of these topics among the local community and visitors.
