History

In 2006 ProAves acquired a set of three properties on the island of San Andrés with mangrove habitats for migratory birds. The intention was to turn these islands into a mechanism to consolidate and promote research, conservation and education of coastal birds and their associated biodiversity, and spread awareness among the local community and tourists visiting the area.

Location

The area was purchased with the support of Robert Giles, from the ProAves Council, and bears his name in honor of the Vireo de San Andrés (Vireo caribaeus) locally called Chincherry, an endemic bird of the island. It is intended to become a strategic training center in banding techniques for Colombia and the Caribbean, which allows strengthening different projects and collaboration with other banding programs in the region. San Andrés is a small island in the Colombian Caribbean that is an important layover area for migratory birds. It is part of the “Seaflower” Biosphere Reserve, which has been declared an Important Area for the Conservation of Birds- IBA (Birdlife 2005) (Map see).
