Conservación Colombiana adheres to international ethical standards to ensure transparency in the publication process for all parties involved (authors, reviewers, editors), such as those set forth by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics): International Standards for Editors and Authors and Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing.

By submitting an article, authors agree to the journal’s copyright notice, in accordance with Law 23 of January 1982 on copyright.

Without the express authorization of the Editorial Committee of Conservación Colombiana, any total or partial reproduction of its content for commercial purposes is prohibited.

By submitting a manuscript to Conservación Colombiana, authors agree to follow its rules, consent to publication, and declare that all listed authors were involved in the key aspects of the research, that the study is scientifically valid, and that it has not been previously published or submitted simultaneously to another journal.

Conservación Colombiana uses software such as Turnitin and PaperPass to cross-check for plagiarism, duplicate submissions, previously published articles, and potential research fraud.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF AUTHORS, EDITORS, AND REVIEWERS
Responsibilities of Authors

Authors are required to submit an accurate and precise version of the results or relevant data of their research. All authors must declare that they have not engaged in scientific misconduct such as plagiarism, falsification, selective data reporting, or duplicate publication.

Authors must maintain accurate records and data analyses related to the manuscript submitted to the journal. When reasonably requested by the editor or editorial board, authors must provide or grant access to this information. Once requested, the original data will enter a custody chain that ensures confidentiality and information protection by the journal.

The order of authorship should be a joint decision of all co-authors. Each author’s contribution must be significant enough to take public responsibility for the content. All ideas and opinions in the manuscript are the sole responsibility of the authors.

Individuals who provided comments on the manuscript or contributed to fieldwork, experiments, etc., may be acknowledged in the Acknowledgments section. However, avoid using titles or initials (e.g., Prof., Dr., PhD) and include funding sources for research projects.

Conservación Colombiana assumes that authors submitting manuscripts have followed the ethical codes established by their respective institutions. The Materials and Methods section must indicate whether ethical standards were followed, especially in studies or collections requiring approval by an oversight body (e.g., in accordance with Decree 309 of 2000).

For studies involving animal experimentation, authors must clearly state whether the institution’s or a national research council’s guidelines were followed, or if national laws on animal care and use were considered. Whenever possible, the date and resolution number should be provided.

For manuscripts that include results requiring the deposit of specimens in biological collections, authors must provide collection numbers and collector details, and state where the specimens were deposited or consulted (vouchers). For deposited tissues and DNA sequences, accession numbers must be included, along with collection and/or genetic resource access permits, when applicable.

If part of the content has been previously published or presented elsewhere, authors must acknowledge and cite those sources appropriately and provide a copy of such publications to the editor and editorial board. Additionally, proper credit must be given for any material reproduced from other sources. Elements such as tables, figures, photos, or patents requiring special permission for reproduction must be accompanied by a letter of approval from the copyright holders.

Authors must declare any potential conflicts of interest that could unduly influence any stage of the publication process.

They are responsible for reviewing the final version of the manuscript before publication and informing the journal of any errors that should be corrected. If significant errors are discovered after publication, authors must promptly notify the editor and cooperate with the journal to publish a correction, erratum, appendix, notice, or, if necessary, retract the article.

Responsibilities of Editors

Editors must act in a balanced, objective, and fair manner, without any discrimination based on gender, religion, politics, origin, or the authors’ ethics.

They must assess, edit, and publish academic contributions solely based on academic merit, without commercial influence or conflict of interest.

Editors must follow proper procedures for handling ethical complaints or conflicts of interest. The editor and editorial board will act in accordance with the rules, policies, and procedures established by this Code of Ethics. Authors will always have the opportunity to respond to any potential conflicts. Complaints must be supported with documentation and evidence.

Responsibilities of Reviewers

Reviewers must contribute objectively to the evaluation of manuscripts, supporting the improvement of scientific quality in these original research outputs in a timely manner.

They must maintain the confidentiality of the data provided by the editor, editorial board, or authors and use this information appropriately and solely through the provided channels. They may decide whether to retain or copy the manuscript during the review process.

They must inform the editor and editorial board if a manuscript contains elements of plagiarism or significantly resembles other published or in-progress research.

Reviewers must disclose any potential conflicts of interest, such as financial, institutional, collaborative, or other relationships with the authors. If necessary, they should recuse themselves from the review process.

UNETHICAL BEHAVIOR

Procedures for Handling Unethical Behavior

Unethical behavior by authors, whether discovered by or reported to the journal, will first be reviewed by the editor and editorial board.

The editor will make the initial decision, consulting the editorial board and/or the Institutional Editorial Committee when necessary.

All investigation evidence will be kept confidential.

Minor unethical behavior, as deemed by the editor, may be addressed directly with the authors without further consultation. In all cases, authors will have the opportunity to respond to allegations of misconduct.

Serious unethical behavior must be reported to the authors’ affiliated institutions or those supporting the research. The editor, in consultation with the editorial board, will decide whether to involve the institutions based on available evidence or expert consultation.

Correction and Retraction Policy

Conservación Colombiana publishes corrections or retractions in accordance with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines.

A retraction serves to correct and alert readers about manuscripts or articles with erroneous data or findings that cannot be validated or trusted. Such errors may arise from honest mistakes, careless errors, or research misconduct.

Retractions may also inform readers about redundant publication, plagiarism, peer-review manipulation, unauthorized use of materials or data, copyright infringement, legal issues (e.g., defamation, privacy, illegality), unethical research, or undisclosed competing interests that might have unduly influenced the study’s interpretations or recommendations.

The editorial board may consider retracting a publication if:

  • There is clear evidence the findings are unreliable.

  • The work constitutes plagiarism.

  • The findings were previously published without appropriate acknowledgment, disclosure, permission, or justification.

  • The content contains unauthorized materials or data.

Copyright has been infringed or a serious legal issue is present.

Reporting Unethical Research

Unethical research will be reported in the following cases:

  • If published solely on the basis of a peer review process that was compromised or manipulated.

  • If authors failed to disclose a significant competing interest or conflict of interest that could have unduly influenced the interpretations of the work.

Conservación Colombiana will withdraw publications as soon as the editor is convinced that the publication is seriously flawed, misleading, or falls into any of the above categories.
