The submission of a manuscript implies that the author(s) share the Publication Policy and the Code of Ethics of the journal Conservación Colombiana. Furthermore, the author(s) must explicitly state that the manuscript has not been previously published or accepted for publication in another journal or scientific media. The articles published in Conservación Colombiana are the sole responsibility of their authors and not of ProAves or the journal or its editors.

To submit articles to Conservación Colombiana, please check the following checklist and, once all criteria are met, send the submission in a ZIP or RAR file, with all relevant information to the editorial committee at: editor@proaves.org

The author(s) must verify that their submission meets all the elements of the checklist. Submitted articles that do not conform to these guidelines will be returned. Those that meet all requirements will receive a confirmation email stating that the manuscript has entered the review process. If you do not receive a confirmation email within 5 business days, please contact the journal’s editor directly.

The acceptance of articles for publication in Conservación Colombiana depends on the evaluations of the editorial board and two or more subject matter experts. Manuscripts that do not match the journal’s thematic, style, or format criteria will be returned without proceeding to evaluation.

Editorial standards of the journal

When submitting a manuscript, it must conform to the following criteria:

Language of the manuscript

Papers may be in Spanish or English. Manuscripts must be well written, clear, and concise. Those with poor writing, punctuation, or grammar will be returned without further evaluation. Please seek editorial help in the corresponding language if necessary.

Sections of the manuscript

Manuscripts should follow the format for submission and be organized in the following order:

  • Title: Concise and explanatory; should reflect the content of the manuscript. Ideally, maximum 15 words; preferably less. Do not include authors’ scientific names.
  • Abstract: maximum 200 words; should reflect the objective, methods, results, and main conclusions. If there is something novel or exceptional, it should be mentioned here. The abstract must be presented in two languages (Spanish and English).
  • Keywords: maximum 5 keywords, complementary to the title, in Spanish and English, separated by a period. They should be presented in alphabetical order. The use of specialized thesauri is recommended.
  • Introduction: Introduce the subject and provide necessary context for understanding the manuscript. The main objective should be explicitly defined here. Keep the focus on your article’s subject, avoiding a lengthy historical view.
  • Materials and Methods: Provide a detailed description of procedures, materials, location, dates, statistical methods, etc., used in the study. The description must be sufficiently complete to allow replication. If a novel methodology is used, it must be explained and supported.
  • Results: Present findings in an organized and clear way, using appropriate figures. Large tables should be avoided here; instead, put extensive data in an annex if applicable.
  • Discussion: Highlight the most relevant, contentious, or novel points of the study and explain the main results in relation to their significance or contributions to the discipline. Do not state conclusions unsupported by your results.
  • Conclusions (optional): Final thoughts about the study in relation to its objective and future directions. Do not repeat previously presented content.
  • Acknowledgements (optional): A brief, clear paragraph placed between the text and the references. Here you may acknowledge financial support or assistance. Do not use titles such as Dr., Lic., etc.
  • References: References must be current, relevant, and sufficient to support your manuscript. Avoid references to well-established facts. The journal follow APA 7th Edition (Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th Edition).
  • Supplementary material, if applicable, may be included and will be published in the online version, not in the printed journal.
  • Sections should be in bold, with only the first letter in upper case. If subtitles are required, these should appear on the same line as the text, separated by a period, and in bold.
Citation standards

When citing references in the text, follow APA (Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th Edition) guidelines:

  • If there are 1 or 2 authors, use their last names separated by “and” in Spanish and “&” in English (e.g. Krabbe, N. & Molina, F.S. 1996).
  • If there are 3 or more, use the first author’s last name followed by et al. (in italics).
  • If several references are cited together, order them chronologically and separate by semicolon (e.g. Cortes, 1996; Borrero et al., 2001; Stella, 2018).
  • Insert a comma after the authors’ names and before the year (Flórez, 2001).
  • The references list should match in-text citations exactly.
  • If there are multiple references by the same author in the same year, add letters a, b, c afterwards.
  • Do not abbreviate journal titles.
  • Provide all authors’ names and DOI when available.

Format for article
submission

  • Paper size: Letter; margins 2.5 cm on all sides; 1.5 spacing; left aligned (including title and references).
  • All text pages must be numbered at the bottom right corner.
  • Use Times New Roman, 12 points, for all texts. The manuscript should be a maximum of 25 pages, including tables, figures, and annexes.
  • Avoid bold or underlining within paragraphs.
  • Scientific names (genus, species, and subspecies) should be in italics, as well as Latin terms (e.g., sensu, et al.).
  • Do not use footnotes.
  • All abbreviations and measurement units should follow the International System of Units (SI). Always leave a space between the number and the unit (e.g., 16 km, 23°C).
  • Numbers from 1-10 should be in words, except when they precede a measure (e.g., 9 cm) or serve as markers (e.g., plot 2, sample 7).
  • Numbers greater than 10 should be presented in Arabic symbols.
  • If a sentence contains both numbers less than and greater than 10, use Arabic for all to maintain consistency.
  • Do not use a point to separate thousands; use a space instead (e.g., 54 000).
  • Use a point to separate whole from decimal (e.g., 3.1416).
  • Hours should be presented in a 24-hour format (00:00-24:00).
  • Years should be presented in full (e.g., 1996-1998).
  • Spanish months and days should be in lower case; in English, the first letter should be upper case (e.g., January, Saturday).
  • Cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) should be in lower case, except when abbreviated (N, S, E, W) or when they form a proper name (e.g., Cordillera Oriental).
  • The proper geographic format is 02°37’53”N- 56°28’53”W.
  • Elevation should be presented as follows: 1,180 m s.n.m. and in English 1,180 m.a.s.l.

Abbreviations should be explained the first time they appear.

Figures and Graphics

  • Insert figures and tables directly in the text where they should appear once the article is typeset.
  • Refer to figures (graphs, diagrams, illustrations, photographs) and tables in the text in full (e.g., Figure 3, Table 1).
  • Legends should be placed below figures; table titles above.
  • Legends must be sufficiently complete to allow understanding without referring back to the main text. Legends should be in Spanish and English when the manuscript is in English.
  • Figures should be clear, high resolution, and avoid needless complexity (such as 3D effects or borders). If color is necessary, use solid colors instead of patterns. Text, numbers, or symbols in figures should be large enough to be legible once reduced.
  • Figures should be provided as separate files in high resolution.
  • Digital photographs, figures, and maps should be in tiff, jpg, or png format, minimum resolution 300 dpi and minimum width 1,200 pixels; low resolution files should be placed in the text.
  • Structural elements of tables and annexs should be simple; borders should be unified.
  • The font size for tables should be 10 points. Large, complex tables should be avoided; extensive data should be presented in annexs instead.
  • Send tables as separate files in Excel format.
  • Location maps must meet the following criteria:
    1. National or regional geographic location.
    2. North arrow.
    3. Scale.
    4. Coordinate grid.
